Tom and Sandy Ferris, founders of Ferris' Restaurant
Est. 1991

"I bought a café."

Born in Toronto in 1956, Tom Ferris put himself through the University of Toronto by working at Lake Louise Chateau and Jasper Park Lodge, rising from pot washer to Captain Waiter. When the money ran out, he headed west to Victoria — and found his future.

After his first venture, Twist on Wharf Street, and managing Burgundy's Restaurant, Tom met Sandy, who used to come in after work with her friends. She'd become both his partner in life and in the journey ahead.

In 1989, Tom came home and announced: "I bought a café." Café Giovannini on Fort Street was operated by Sandy and Paula, while Tom drove the island selling espresso by day and tended bar at night. Then in November 1990, he came home again: "I bought a restaurant."

On February 4th, 1991, Ferris' Oyster & Burger Bar opened its doors. 35 years later, we're proud to celebrate the legacy Tom and Sandy built — and grateful to everyone who's been part of the story.

How We Cook

Baynes Sound oysters.
House-ground chuck.
Nothing from a freezer.

Our oysters come from Baynes Sound — same waters, same suppliers, for nearly four decades. We shuck them to order because that's when they're best.

Our burgers are ground fresh. The chuck. The relish. The sauce. All made here. We don't do it because it's trendy. We do it because that's how food should taste.

Our seafood is Ocean Wise. Not because we needed a sticker, but because we've been fishing these waters long enough to know they deserve respect.

A New Chapter

Ferris' Burger & Oyster Bar

After 35 years, we're going back to what made us special: legendary burgers and the freshest oysters in town.

The atrium is still here. The brick walls still hold their stories. The warmth hasn't changed.

We're a little more fun now. A little more approachable. And still completely committed to Tom and Sandy's original vision: great food, good people, no pretense.

Ocean Wise

Sustainable seafood isn't a marketing term for us. It's how we've operated since before it had a name. Our oysters, our prawns, our fish — all responsibly sourced.

02

Local First

Baynes Sound oysters. Vancouver Island craft beer. BC wines. We prioritize local because it's better, not because it's on-brand.

03

Community

35 years on the same corner of Yates Street. This isn't just where we work — it's our neighbourhood. You're our neighbours.
